Molissa Fenley and Company

“Water Table” approaches its aquatic theme in the abstract, through qualities of motion and timing. The four parts excerpted here are performed by Fenley and the terrific Holley Farmer and Kristen Foote, among others, with accompaniment by the percussionist Frank Cassara and the violist Ralph Farris. The work is quietly meditative and rather dry, full of precise sculptural poses that tend to smudge during rare bursts of speed. Most resonant is “Mali,” a solo for Fenley, in which hieratic positions acquire desert-mirage suggestions of animals and gods.
